Dear Parents,
I so enjoyed seeing all the wonderful and creative costumes on historical dress-up day. I'm still in awe of how creative and well-planned they were! We also enjoyed our Boxtops treat last Monday, and I'm hoping on February 8, Second grade wins Box Tops again and continues our winning streak. :)
We started our stalactite and stalagmite demonstration last week, and we're watching them grow across a string from mason jars filled with epson salt. I'll post a picture when we're finished!
Looking forward to this week!
Mrs. Poncy
Important Info:
Science: We're starting our Rock Collection Project this week! Students need to begin looking for interesting rocks to start their collection. They will collect their first two rocks this week and bring to class on WED for Rock Show and Tell. Please encourage students to collect rocks that can be stored in an egg carton or a small to medium-sized Tupperware container (as opposed to large rocks.) A basic Rock field guide will be sent home on Monday attached to a blank rock collection form.
Please note: I prefer students do not include rocks they have previously collected, only rocks they discover during this project's duration. We want to encourage discovery and exploration!
Rock PoemMinerals form each type of rock, Found in the Earth's crust, cut out block by block. Sedimentary rock is sand, Sea creatures, mud and pebbles pressed into land. Igneous rock is made from fire; It comes from volcanoes-sure to inspire. Metamorphic rock is hard-pressed; Heat and pressure form a slab as you guessed. Meteorites are rocks from space, Stones fall from the sky in a fiery race. Math: The end of this week we are finishing our Singapore 2A Math books. Students will be given a review on all concepts learned on Monday and assessed on Wednesday in a similar format. This assessment will cover division in word problems. Then, we move onto Singapore Math 2B! I'm amazed at all your child has accomplished!
Reading: Please continue to have your child bring,
The Minstrel in the Tower to class on school days. Also, please ensure they read the assigned chapters on homeschool days so that when they read with their partner on Wednesday, they'll be up to date with what is happening in the story's plot.
