2/25-3/1

Dear Parents,

I was so happy last week to see that so many of the kids are enjoying Little Pear! This book presented a great opportunity to discuss Little Pear's tendency towards disobedience as a conversation starter about virtue and the perfect son that Jesus was! This week, we will further explore theme in the book as we get deeper into Little Pear's adventures. We will also review character traits, setting, and story problem and plot. I'm looking forward to this week. :)

Blessings in Christ,

Mrs. Poncy

2/18-2/22

Dear Parents,

We are knee deep in working with money in the classroom. I enjoy seeing them working with the fake money, since it gives them the hands-on learning so many of them need and enjoy. It's neat to teach a skill that will follow them the rest of their lives, in a very real world sort of way!

I cannot believe that there are only 6 more class days until Spring break! I'm looking forward to finishing strong before our next chunk of time off. :) I will enjoy these next 6 class days with your kiddo.

In Christ,

Mrs. Poncy

Important info:

Math: Focus on reviewing math multiplication facts this week using flash cards. We don't want them to forget their facts since we're camping out in money for awhile.

Handwriting/CopyWork: This week consider having your child practice their cursive by copying select stanzas from the planets poem that was sent home. Although copy work can seem antiquated sometimes, it is very much a valuable tool in Classical education.

Reading: Please remember we are starting Little Pear this week! Please have your child bring their book to school and to read the assigned reading from the book each homeschool day.

2/11-2/15

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone enjoys the student holiday/teacher in-service on Monday! Thanks for your patience during my absences while I cared for my children who had the flu. I am pleased to report that the substitutes gave excellent feedback regarding behavior while I was gone.

This will be a shorter week, but still a productive one. This week, your child will bring home a moon tracker sheet on Wednesday. This will give them an opportunity for nightly observation, prediction, and to appreciate its beauty.

Happy Valentines Day! I so love all 16 of my second graders.

In Christ,

Mrs. Poncy

Important Info:

Science: Please encourage neatness with the moon tracker sheet! Charting the moon around the same time each evening will lend itself to more accuracy.  If you can't see the moon because its cloudy, you can look up the moon online on the weather channel website! Please have them put their name on it and keep up with the sheet in their binder. I will take a participation grade when it is completed.

Reading: We are going to start our next classical read, Little Pear on 2/18! Please have your child bring this book to class each school day.

Memory Work: Please let me know if you do not have a Southeast Asia map in your child's binder, and I will send one home! Thank you!

Memory WorkPoem: How All Things Praise the Lord Due 2/27

2/4-2/8

Dear Parents,

I was so impressed last week with how well the students memorized the South Asia map. I know this prior knowledge will come in handy one day, especially when considering how many countries in South Asia are unreached with the good news of the gospel!

This week, we are starting a new classroom virtue, adaptability. We are introduced this week to King Alfred the great of England, who was in the middle of training the farmers of Wessex to fight against the Vikings when he had to change his plans and hide for an entire year with a peasant family. His adaptability, however, preceded his eventual victory against the Vikings. I pray the students will grasp this virtue as we study it in our classroom and at home. I'm looking forward to another wonderful week with your child!

Blessings,

Mrs. Poncy

Important info:

Grammar: We are focusing on letter writing this week. We will write a letter in class on Monday, and students will address the envelope and send the letter on Tuesday. (Materials needed: An envelope and a stamp! :))I look forward to seeing them craft letters this week in class.

Memory Work: Please check your child's binder to make sure they have the new map we'll be studying, Southeast Asia. This map will be assessed on 3/27.

Science: We're learning a new poem this week about the Planets! You can practice this poem at home on homeschool days to ensure your child is memorizing key details about the different planets. Memorization, of course, is key in Classical Education. I will pass this poem out Monday and have students file this behind their Memory Work tab.
