2/3-2/7

Dear Parents,

I'm sorry I was not able to finish out the week with your child, but I'm praying I will be able to join the kids again on Monday.  I'm praying everyone stays healthy as this month unfolds!

We are starting a new chapter book this week, Knights of the Round Table. I think they are going to really enjoy this one! After they read the assigned reading, you can monitor their comprehension by asking them questions about the book. The literature bookmark I handed out at the beginning of the year is a good conversation starter to see if they are engaged.

As a rule, good readers:

Use expression
Don't read too fast
Don't read too slow
Self-correct

I hope everyone has a wonderful homeschool week. I am really enjoying seeing all the growth taking places in the kids in so many ways! I really can't believe it's already February.

Blessings in Christ,

Mrs. Poncy

Important info:

Memory Work: Please continue to work on memory work (quarter poem, catechism, map, facts) during homeschool days. We do this in class as well. Some of these things are due in a month.

Spelling: If you want to give your child opportunities to read words that correspond with our spelling lesson this week (Long E Spelled EA) go back to OPG 125 to read text that has this particular vowel pair.

Science Poem: We will be memorizing the new Meteorite poem that I emailed, but this one is not for a grade, only to support our next lesson on Space Rocks.

Dear Parents,

It's been such a joy to begin The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe with the students. Everyone is so engaged, and it reminds me how wonderful The Chronicles of Narnia series really is. If you are struggling to find books your child likes to read, I can promise you this series is a hit for this group.

Don't forget it's Pizza Day and Spirit day this coming Wednesday! I think this is my favorite day of the month...because I don't have to pack a lunch!

Looking forward to a great week ahead!

Mrs. Poncy

Important Info:

Reading: We begin our next Classical book this week, Medieval Feast by ALIKI. Students will need to bring this book to class on Wednesday only. It's a quick read, and students have Tues/Thurs/Fri to read it. Many will want to finish it on the first day! There aren't assigned pages, just the week to finish. The book also fits in nicely with where we are in history.

Math:  Please make sure students do not work ahead on their math assignments this week. This ensures they have work to do in class on their school days. I do not have extra assignments prepared for students.

Geography: The Asia Map test is this Wednesday!

Dear Parents,

The students had a great time last week watching their volcanoes erupt! Who knew an Alka-Seltzer tablet could be so useful during science class. :) The class earned their 20th class compliment last week, so they have earned a very short popcorn party at the end of day on Monday. If you do not want your child to have popcorn, please send in a substitute treat for them.

Have a wonderful homeschool week!!!

Blessings in Christ,

Mrs. Poncy

Important info:

Reading: I am in the process of administering running records for students. This gives me the opportunity to hear their speed, expression, and overall reading habits (ex, do they self-correct as they read, skip an unknown word or sound out unfamiliar words when reading). I'll be in touch with you about these soon!
