9/2-9/6

Dear Parents,

Enjoy the shorter week, as I know you will! I hope everyone has a restful holiday. I have been so impressed with how prepared all the students seem in class. It's time for a well-earned break ;)

Important info:

Math:
Math is going to get a bit more complicated this week, but I have full confidence the students will catch on fast. Renaming, (I learned it in my childhood as regrouping,) can be a trickier concept to grasp, but we will practice a lot and slow down a bit if needed. It might be helpful to have place value discs and Base-10 blocks on hand if you don't already.

Reading:
From here on out, the OPG lessons will require two days of instruction. The last few weeks have been mostly review from last year.

Geography:
Just a friendly reminder that students will take their Continents and Oceans assessment on Wednesday. I am so excited for them to get to show off what I know they already know!

Dear Parents,

We had a great week last week! I was excited to see how engaged the students seemed in reading. Many have asked to borrow books of mine, or talk about the Boxcar Children in their own conversations. Cultivating an interest and love for reading is huge in second grade.

I am looking forward to another week with your child!

In Christ,
Mrs. Poncy

Important info:

Math: We are focusing on math fluency this week with our addition and subtraction facts. Singapore Math 2A and 2B assumes students know their addition and subtraction facts within 10, but we will review this week and in the coming weeks. Browse the Fortis Curricula website to access flash cards, games and number bonds for extra support.  Singapore Math Resources

Reading: DRA testing is underway but not finished, yet. I will contact you when I have your child's DRA level. We will finish testing this week.

Mental Math: When Mental Math assignments are assigned at home, focus on just having students circle 5-10 of them to complete. 10-15 mins is all you should spend on Mental Math.

Dear Parents,

We had a great first week of school! We spent a lot of time practicing routines and procedures so deep learning can take place. We began learning our Quarter 1 Memory work, and had some great discussions on courage and God's power in creating the universe. I am excited about starting our first classical read this week, Pompeii--Buried Alive! by Edith Kunhardt. Your child will need to bring this book to class on Monday and Wednesday!

Please have your child bring the following items to school next week:
Student binder
Math Textbook
Math Workbook
Apologia Textbook
Apologia Journal
Pompeii--Buried Alive!
Lunch/Snack

Excited for the week ahead! This is such a wonderful group of kiddos :)

In Christ,
Mrs. Poncy
