Memory WorkScience: Planets Poem (First 4 stanzas: Mercury-Mars Due for recitation or written on 12/7)

Fortis Academy Second Grade - 11/16-11/20

Please label all books with child's name-pencil in the front cover is fine.

Math-Quiz over 2's and 3's times table on Wednesday.  Please check and correct all work done at home.  You don't need to turn any work assigned at home unless it's designated on the blog.

Grammar-We introduced prepositional phrases this week.  They can be tricky because some of them are adverbs also.  Students should look for a noun after the preposition (object of the preposition) to determine whether it is an adverb or preposition.  For the workbook practice on Thursday, read through directions with child but have them complete on their own.  (They do not need to know the rule #).  If they skip any part or it's incomplete, instead of correcting it, have them go back and read the directions to see if they can identify what they skipped or completed incorrectly on their own.  This is a great way to practice following multi-step directions :)

Reading-Please bring "Minstrel in the Tower" to school starting Monday.  Students will be completing a "flower pot" book report (template sent home last week) that they will present to the class on December 9.  They will be graded for completion as well as grammar and spelling.  We will be displaying their work in class.

Science- Moon Journals are due Wednesday.

Poem assessed on Wednesday in groups of three!

Fortis Academy Second Grade - 11/9-11/13

Grammar- We are starting back with Chapter 8 of Shurley Grammar this week.  Please continue to re-enforce the parts of speech we have learned thus far in texts outside of Shurley so we can work toward mastery.

Reading-We are finishing up Little Pear this week.  The students have loved this book and it's been so fun to discuss it with them.  We are completing a class project for the book.  We'll be starting The Minstrel in the Tower next week.  The students will be completing a book report at home along with this book that they will present to the class.  Look for the instructions and graphic format in the binders.  OPG: We are heading toward the finish line with OPG so when you have extra time, go back to lessons that you have flagged that your student struggled with and repeat them for fluency.

Science- Moon journals are due next week.  Students need to identify and sketch the phase of the moon for at least 10 days.  Some of the phases look similar, but I told the students that after several days of observing, they should be able to tell if it's waxing or waning because it will appear to be getting bigger or smaller.  Also, if your student is missing a grade for the Earth Quiz, please bring that Monday.
