Dear Parents,

I was so impressed with how well everyone did with their first quarter poems! I LOVE to watch the kids become so confident when speaking in front of others. In addition, I can't believe the first quarter ends this week. We are knee deep in measurement, and then later this week start multiplication! I am looking forward to all these lessons.

We had some great discussions last week about the divinity of Christ. We are really dissecting the Nicene Creed and worshiping God through the study of His Word and liturgy! Excited for the upcoming week!

Blessings,

Mrs. Poncy

Important info:

Reading: This week we start, Leif the Lucky. I'm so excited to start this book. Please have students bring their, Leif the Lucky book to class.

Math: Word problems are still a priority! Doing 2 problems on home days will be helpful. Model your own thinking and reasoning for them, too. This week, we start multiplication. We will focus this week on understanding multiplication as repeated addition. We will have a end of quarter math assessment on WED! Problems will be in the exact same format as Review 3 and Review 4 in the math workbook.

Memory Work: Both the Nicene Creed AND the 2nd Quarter poem are due the end of Nov, the week after Thanksgiving.

Parent conferences: Parent conferences are not mandatory, but I will be sending an online sign-up for conferences after the end of the first quarter! I am really looking forward to meeting with you!

Dear Parents,

I'm so encouraged about our virtue this week as we begin to reiterate in class the seriousness of how God views honesty! Honesty, the Godly choice of abandoning exaggeration and lies for biblical truth and reality! I'm praying we would all be encouraged this week regarding truth-telling in class and at home.

This week, I'm excited for our new math unit of measurement! This unit is always so fun for the kids. They love to use their rulers! I like to watch them learn how to think critically about how big or small everyday objects are, and to estimate regarding what's reasonable (or an unreasonable length!) We will definitely be busy using our rulers this week!

Thank you for the chance to be apart of your child's learning on school days! I'm so thankful and ready for this next week!

Blessings in Christ,

Mrs. Poncy

Important Info:

Reading: Increasing Fluency: This week, emphasize reading with your child and encourage them to use expression in their voices. Model reading paragraphs for them and have them copy your voice inflections. Also, because the paragraph length in the OPG lessons can sometimes be shorter, consider reviewing paragraphs of past OPG lessons if you noticed errors when reading with your child.

Math: It would be helpful to have a ruler handy at home and a measuring tape for workbook practices this week. Although we move on from addition/subtraction, please choose a couple of word problems, (you can get these from textbook practices previously assigned) and have your child work a couple of addition/subtraction word problems at home on school days. We want to keep giving them opportunities to think critically about what word problems are asking them to do. Have them do number bonding, draw pictures, and underline key words to help!

Memory Work: As we begin to study the Council of Nicea timeline card this week, (the Divinity of Christ) we will start memorizing the 2nd grade history poem, the Nicene Creed, due on 11/26! This is a wonderful opportunity to reiterate the truth that Jesus was fully God and fully man through this beautiful liturgy with your child! (I will also send a hard copy of this home on Monday.)

Dear Parents,

Our class vote regarding our next read-aloud was almost unanimous last week. We just finished the first book in the Boxcar Children series, and we are moving on to the next book in the series! We'll start, Surprise Island, this week. I'm so thrilled that the students are enjoying it so much. We're really hooked!

The class earned a popsicle party for earning 20 class compliments from myself and others who have observed great behavior and character. We'll have our popsicle party on Monday!

I can't believe this year is flying by! I'm really looking forward to another great week.

Blessings in Christ,
Kelli Poncy

Important Info:

Math: Please continue to review addition and subtraction facts with your child. You may find the link to flashcards here! Subtraction Facts and Addition Facts . Please find the addition/subtraction math review in your child's binder for the math assessment on Wednesday.

Reading: I will begin OPG fluency checks beginning next week. These fluency checks will incorporate past OPG lesson material that has been taught. I will email more information about these to you. I will also be in communication with you soon about your child's DRA level.

Science/History Journals: Please have your child bring their science/history journal on Wednesday of next week, so that I can take a completion grade. The expectation for journal responses is that students follow punctuation rules and capitalization rules, as well as write 2-3 sentences for their written responses.

Spelling: Please add the phonogram cards we learned last week from our OPG lessons (ci, ti, si) to the review section of your child's spelling box. Please continue to review previous AAS Level 1 and 2 Key Cards.

Organization of Binders: Just a reminder, work that is done at home should be filed behind the correct divider, unless I ask for it back. I do look through binders each week to see how students are doing!

Memory Work: Our poem, "The Months" is fast approaching on 9/26. Please practice this poem daily with your child.

Upcoming Dates: Class Popsicle Party: 9/14, Math Assessment: 9/19, School-wide Dodgeball Tournament: 9/21, Student Holiday: 10/8
