Welcome to 2nd Grade! I feel so blessed to be teaching your sweet children this year. I can’t wait to get to know each one of them, to find out what makes them special and unique. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I’m looking forward to a great year!
Math-Start with the lesson in the HIG (Home Instructor's Guide) and then work through textbook problems together. This work is not turned in and can be done on a separate piece of paper, on a whiteboard or orally. If your child is able to easily complete a few examples from the textbook, they do not need to do the entire assigned portion. If there are multiple sections, make sure you do a few problems from each section as they increase in difficulty. They can then move to the workbook, which is done independently. Please look over their workbook pages and put a check in the corner to let me know you have reviewed them. When MM (mental math) is assigned, you can make a copy of it and use it as a warm up. Please don’t spend more than 5-10 minutes on MM.
Spelling-When reviewing your card box, please have your child say the phonogram after looking at the card, but also practice going through the cards with you dictating the phonogram and having them write it down without looking at the card. This is what it means when the blog says to do sound cards. You will dictate words and sentences on the spelling pages found in your child’s binder. These will stay in the binder and we will periodically clean them out.
Reading-OPG (Ordinary Parent’s Guide) will be assigned as “Two Review and One New.” During your reading time at home, please review two of the lessons (they don’t need to be the two prior lessons but ones you have flagged that your child struggled with) and the new lesson. ***If you are new, please start this week at the beginning of OPG and start working your child through the book in lieu of independent reading time this week. You don’t need to read them the entire lesson. Just have the student read what is in bold and flag lessons they struggle with. We will start next week with L135.
History-There will be two questions to choose from for the journal entries. You might only be able to answer one of them. All journal entries should be a minimum of two complete sentences. Please have your child date the journal entry. This will stay at home but I will collect once a quarter for a homework grade.
Memory Work-Please spend 5-10 minutes every homeschool day reviewing our map and poem. We will also work on this during class.
