Dear Parents,

I'm thrilled that our class won the Box Tops competition! Thank you all of you who contributed to clipping away tirelessly so that our class could wear pajamas on Monday and have a cupcake! Thank you!

We're exploring a new virtue this week, cooperation. This is being tied to our history lesson, "The Council of Chalcedon," because in AD 451, 400 bishops had to gather together to settle a lingering controversy the church still struggled with regarding the nature of Christ. Some focused too much on His humanity, others too much on His deity. But through cooperation, they concluded again that Jesus was fully God and fully man. I'm thankful that the Holy Spirit is our helper and unifies believers.

I'm looking forward to all the wonderful things this week holds for us.

Blessings,

Mrs. Poncy

Important Info:

Reading: We're starting Minstrel in the Tower this week! Please have your child bring this book to class on school days. We're focusing on the plot this week and identifying the main problem of a story and the main events that tell that story.

Spelling: Please be sure to check your child's weekly spelling test, and review the rule if your struggled with it. Also, please place spelling in your child's binder every week.

Memory Work: Please continue to spend a few minutes a day studying the Middle East Map, as the the due date is fast approaching.

Math: Please remind your child to return Practice 6B from the math textbook last week if they did not bring it. Thank you!

Science: This week we start a new weather unit, Rocks and Fossils. This is the following poem we will practice in class. Please review this on homeschool days, too. This will not be assessed, but it is helpful to know.

Rocks
Minerals form each type of rock,
Found in the Earth's crust, cut out block by block.
Sedimentary rock is sand,
Sea creatures, mud and pebbles pressed into land.
Igneous rock is made from fire;
It comes from volcanoes-sure to inspire.
Metamorphic rock is hard-pressed;
Heat and pressure form a slab as you guessed.
Meteorites are rocks from space,
Stones fall from the sky in a fiery race.

Dear Parents,

I'm so looking forward to teaching history this week, simply because we begin The Middle Ages! Although it's interchangeably named, The Dark Ages, I felt that our virtue of responsibility correlated, because some of the most amazing scientific advancements of this time period came from people who worked hard to make life easier by inventing the plough, the printing press and even eyeglasses, just to name a few.

I'm so thankful for all your hard work (and your child's hard work) last quarter. Please let me know if you have any questions at all about your child's report card. I'm also available after school until 4:00 most school days to chat by phone or in person!

Blessings in Christ,

Kelli Poncy

Important Info:

Memory Work: Please continue to spend time each day reviewing memory work, especially the Middle East Map. This will be assessed in 2 1/2 weeks. Students will need to point and identify. Most of them like to sing the song to make it easier!

Reading: We are finally finished reading Leif the Lucky! We'll spend one more week in class talking about the book before we wrap it up, so please have your child bring their book one more week before we retire it!

Math: We'll have a Math assessment on Multiplication of 2s on Wed. These questions will be in the same format as TB Practice 6A, Previous Workbook Assignments and WB Review 5. Note: There will be a couple of questions that will cover measurement, also, since I did not give one whole assessment devoted to that.

Organization of Binders: As we enter into the 2nd quarter, please clean out papers from First Quarter and file away. Thanks so much!

Dear Parents,

I was so proud of all the students' hard work on their four seasons posters. They are hung in our classroom, and we'll enjoy the beauty of them this quarter. The students really enjoyed getting to show off their posters last Wednesday! We loved ALL the creativity!

Just a reminder that on Wednesday, October 31, students may dress up as a historical figure. Since 2nd grade begins with the birth of Christ and we'll be studying the Dark Ages around the end of October, some ideas could include: Mary, Joseph, an angel, a shepherd, an Apostle or a Roman Soldier. Other ideas: A viking, a monk, or any of the historical figures we've studied, such as Diocletian, Constantine, Herod the Great, Jerome, or Erik the Red. Please email me though if you still need help with a costume idea!

I'm so excited for the upcoming week, and I treasure our school days very much.

In Christ,

Mrs. Poncy

Important Info:

Math: It's time to start memorizing the 2s and 3s times tables! These will be assessed on Monday, 10/29. Please spend a few minutes daily (you can even do in the car) to practice. This satisfies the following student learning objective for second grade at Fortis Academy: Student knows multiplication tables of 2 and 3.  I will also send home a blank multiplication grid and completed x table on MON to help your child study.

Reading: We will focus on the structural element of understanding setting this week in, Leif the Lucky. Setting is the time and place, or when and where, a story happens. Focus on the setting this week in your discussion at home. Ask your child to identify the setting, how it changes, how it can even add to the story or how the story could even be different without the particular setting involved.

Science: Please continue to have your child fill out their student weather journal template and return when completed! Emphasize using adjectives to describe the weather in the first box on the template (hot, sunny, cool, cold, warm, humid).

Student Job Applications: Please have your child return their job applications on Monday so that I can start assigning classroom duties. I am so excited to have more help around the classroom and to keep reinforcing responsibility :)

Parent Teacher Conferences: If you haven't gotten a chance to sign up for a parent-teacher conference, I still have spots available! Please email me if you did not get the Sign-Up Genius link I emailed.
