Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! I'm excited to finish strong before our winter break coming up in two weeks! We have a short amount of time left, but a lot to cover! :) I'm especially looking forward to studying our new virtue this week, righteousness, and studying the life of the Monks who demonstrated loyalty and devotion to God!

On Wednesday, December 5th, we will have a book exchange in class! We would love for you to bring a classical book that is new or gently used, so the students can enjoy giving a present to a friend and going home with a new book!

Looking forward to a wonderful week,

Mrs. Poncy

Dear Parents,

Thanksgiving is almost here! During this holiday, I'm specifically thankful God has seen it fit to allow me the opportunity to teach your child and to help build your child's view of God and His Kingdom. I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving break as we all take this holiday to rest in His provision, love, and eternal promises.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Mrs. Poncy

Important Info:

Science/History Journals: I am going to take some time over the break to read more in depth your child's written responses. Please have them bring this to class on WED, and I'll return them on Monday, November 26th.

Cursive writing: We're picking up the pace a bit in cursive this week! I would like to have all the letters introduced by the end of the 2nd quarter so students can start writing in cursive after the Christmas break. I love seeing their cursive developing so nicely in class.

Independent Reading over the holidays: Please continue to encourage your child to read over the break and to incorporate reading often. Please let me know if you need any ideas for series or authors your child might be interested in!

Dear Parents,

I so enjoyed seeing all the wonderful and creative costumes on historical dress-up day. I'm still in awe of how creative and well-planned they were! We also enjoyed our Boxtops treat last Monday, and I'm hoping on February 8,  Second grade wins Box Tops again and continues our winning streak. :)

We started our stalactite and stalagmite demonstration last week, and we're watching them grow across a string from mason jars filled with epson salt. I'll post a picture when we're finished!

Looking forward to this week!

Mrs. Poncy

Important Info:

Science: We're starting our Rock Collection Project this week! Students need to begin looking for interesting rocks to start their collection. They will collect their first two rocks this week and bring to class on WED for Rock Show and Tell. Please encourage students to collect rocks that can be stored in an egg carton or a small to medium-sized Tupperware container (as opposed to large rocks.) A basic Rock field guide will be sent home on Monday attached to a blank rock collection form.  Please note: I prefer students do not include rocks they have previously collected, only rocks they discover during this project's duration. We want to encourage discovery and exploration!

Rock Poem
Minerals form each type of rock,
Found in the Earth's crust, cut out block by block.
Sedimentary rock is sand,
Sea creatures, mud and pebbles pressed into land.
Igneous rock is made from fire;
It comes from volcanoes-sure to inspire.
Metamorphic rock is hard-pressed;
Heat and pressure form a slab as you guessed.
Meteorites are rocks from space,
Stones fall from the sky in a fiery race.

Math: The end of this week we are finishing our Singapore 2A Math books. Students will be given a review on all concepts learned on Monday and assessed on Wednesday in a similar format. This assessment will cover division in word problems. Then, we move onto Singapore Math 2B! I'm amazed at all your child has accomplished!

Reading: Please continue to have your child bring, The Minstrel in the Tower to class on school days. Also, please ensure they read the assigned chapters on homeschool days so that when they read with their partner on Wednesday, they'll be up to date with what is happening in the story's plot.
