Math-Start with the lesson in the HIG (Home Instructor's Guide) and then work through textbook problems together. This work is not turned in and can be done on a separate piece of paper, on a whiteboard or orally. If your child is able to easily complete a few examples from the textbook, they do not need to do the entire assigned portion. If there are multiple sections, make sure you do a few problems from each section as they increase in difficulty. They can then move to the workbook, which is done independently. Please look over their workbook pages and put a check in the corner to let me know you have reviewed them. When MM (mental math) is assigned, you can make a copy of it and use it as a warm up. Please don’t spend more than 5-10 minutes on MM. When a specific strategy is taught, please ensure they have learned to use the strategy even if it is not their preferred way to solve a problem. (Have them demonstrate it on at least 3-5 problems. If they show mastery, they are free to solve problems another way.)
Spelling-When reviewing your card box, please have your child say the phonogram after looking at the card, but also practice going through the cards with you dictating the phonogram and having them write it down without looking at the card. You will dictate words and sentences on the spelling pages found in your child’s binder under the spelling tab.
Reading-OPG (Ordinary Parent’s Guide) will be assigned as “Two Review and One New.” During your reading time at home, please review two of the lessons (they don’t need to be the two prior lessons but ones you have flagged that your child struggled with) and the new lesson. Your child should be reading 20 minutes every home school day. If OPG only takes 10 minutes, they may supplement that time with a classical book of their choosing.
History-All History journal entries should have a title and the date. When they answer the question, the entry should be in 2-4 complete sentences. Please encourage them to use correct grammar and spelling. One way to do this is to have them dictate to you what they want to say and you copy it with correct grammar and spelling, then have them copy it into their journals. This will stay at home but I will collect once a quarter for a homework grade. Once a semester each child will present what they learned the last week in History to the class. I will designate when it is their turn on the blog. They may have a card with notes on it (no complete sentences), but have them practice it enough that they are not reading from the card.
Memory Work-Please spend 5-10 minutes every home school day reviewing our map and poem. We will also work on this during class.
Reciting - We will utilize speaking in front of the class in several different subjects. When it comes time to recite, please have them practice reciting at home for different types of audiences (siblings, stuffed animals, parents). Work on fluency, not fidgeting and eye contact. They should also not be reading directly from any notes.
Grammar-Please complete all assigned portions of the grammar assignment. At times, we will cover the same content in class, but I will use different sentences to allow them to practice certain concepts. If you are unsure of how the question/answer flow works, there are oral examples at the end of the CD with the jingles.
