9/23-9/27

Dear Parents,

We had so much fun with some hands-on activities last week in Science and History! I love the Classical tradition, because at this age it values exploration, games, and projects as the matches to strike love for learning.

Last week, we set reading goals and some of them commented to me that they want to read even more than they already are! Please feel free to contact me if you ever need ideas for any chapter book series that can further engage your child in reading Classical literature. Ideally, they would be so engaged in books these days that they would find a series of books that they can't put down.

Have a wonderful week! I really enjoy teaching your child and look forward to every school day.

Grace and peace,

Mrs. Poncy

Important info:

Mental Math Strategies:
Please see bottom of p47 in the HIG for Mental Math strategies when dealing with subtraction problems that involve renaming. Mental Math #17 is on the blog twice for this week, because these problems involve mental math where borrowing occurs.

DRA Goal Sheet: Please keep your child's DRA goal sheet behind the reading tab in their binder. I enjoyed talking with them about their reading level and seeing them create goals for themselves for the end of this school year.

Reading Rate:
Here's a helpful article you can read regarding how to help increase your child's reading rate. This is important, because as children get older the literature will get more dense, and it will take longer for them to read material and to complete assignments.

*Literature Bookmark* I am sending home a literature bookmark made of card stock. It has helpful sentence starters that can help you and your child begin discussion about the classical books you read at home.

Memory Work: We have two big things due this week: Our Quarter 1 Poem, and The Children's Catechism #1-17.  Please take some extra time to review these with your child before these tests on WED. Consider having them recite their poem to a different family member to give them even more opportunities to practice.
