9/30-10/4

Dear Parents,

Everyone did so well with all the Memory work that was due last week.  It was very neat to hear them recite some major, basic truths about God so effortlessly. I know that God will use these truths throughout their lives!

The end of the First Quarter is almost here. I look forward to seeing all the ways they will grow more and mature even more these next 10 weeks.

In Christ,

Mrs. Poncy

History: Please have your child bring their history journal to school on Monday. These will be taken up and returned on Wednesday, October 2nd. I am looking forward to reading everything the students have learned in history so far.

Quarter 2 Poem: The Quarter 2 Poem is assessed as a whole group during our Thanksgiving Assembly. Even though it is not assessed individually, please help your child study this one often, because we will be performing this one in front of a large audience.

Dolch Sight Word List: Here is a list of words that might be useful to add to your child's personal word wall folder. These words are commonly spelled by this age group.

Dear Parents,

We had so much fun with some hands-on activities last week in Science and History! I love the Classical tradition, because at this age it values exploration, games, and projects as the matches to strike love for learning.

Last week, we set reading goals and some of them commented to me that they want to read even more than they already are! Please feel free to contact me if you ever need ideas for any chapter book series that can further engage your child in reading Classical literature. Ideally, they would be so engaged in books these days that they would find a series of books that they can't put down.

Have a wonderful week! I really enjoy teaching your child and look forward to every school day.

Grace and peace,

Mrs. Poncy

Important info:

Mental Math Strategies:
Please see bottom of p47 in the HIG for Mental Math strategies when dealing with subtraction problems that involve renaming. Mental Math #17 is on the blog twice for this week, because these problems involve mental math where borrowing occurs.

DRA Goal Sheet: Please keep your child's DRA goal sheet behind the reading tab in their binder. I enjoyed talking with them about their reading level and seeing them create goals for themselves for the end of this school year.

Reading Rate:
Here's a helpful article you can read regarding how to help increase your child's reading rate. This is important, because as children get older the literature will get more dense, and it will take longer for them to read material and to complete assignments.

Reading Fluency Article

*Literature Bookmark* I am sending home a literature bookmark made of card stock. It has helpful sentence starters that can help you and your child begin discussion about the classical books you read at home.

Memory Work: We have two big things due this week: Our Quarter 1 Poem, and The Children's Catechism #1-17.  Please take some extra time to review these with your child before these tests on WED. Consider having them recite their poem to a different family member to give them even more opportunities to practice.

9/16-9/20

Dear Parents,

It's hard to believe we are already beginning our 6th week of school. That went by fast! This week, we will start reading Leif the Lucky. by D'Aulaire. Please have your child bring this book to class on school days. This book is rich in similes and metaphors, and also personification. We will be talking about these in class and doing mini-lessons on these different literary features. In Math, we are wrapping things up in addition and now focusing on subtraction. As always, I bet they catch on fast!

Have a wonderful week!

Mrs. Poncy

Important info:

Reading: I have your child's DRA score and will be in touch soon to communicate this to you. I also plan on having the students set reading goals for the rest of the school year! I can't wait to see them set their goals and then reach them.

Oral Narrations:
We have been practicing how to be clear, confident communicators in class through oral narrations. Students are still learning how to address an audience without using filler words such as, "um, uh, or so." This is a hard skill to learn! Please enforce this at home when students retell what they have learned after listening.
