1/28-2/1

Dear Parents,

The next box-top deadline is soon approaching! If you would like 2nd grade to defend our title as the reigning Fortis champion ;) send those box tops in this week, and I'll add to the small collection we've already started!

We practiced our solar system poem a lot last week, and the kids had fun with the motions. Below is the poem that you can practice at home with your child, and we'll soon be moving on to a poem about the Planets! I love how songs, chants and jingles are such a staple of Classical education. This week in history, we are moving on to studying the great kings of France, focusing first on Charlemagne. It should be a GREAT week!

In Christ,

Mrs. Poncy

The Solar System

Our solar system is a celestial collection;
All orbiting the sun in a circular perfection.
Eight planets move around a central ball of burning gas;
Two bands of rock and millions of stars complete the space mass.

Important Info:

Math: There will be a multiplication and division assessment on Wednesday. Please have your child pay careful attention when completing the word problems in the WB exercises this week, as problems like this will be on the assessment.

Memory Work: The South Asia map is due this coming Wed! Please make sure you review the map with your child on Tuesday. They may sing and point, or just point and identify.

Memory WorkPoem: How All Things Praise the Lord Due 2/27; 5x tables due 1/28

1/21-1/25

Dear Parents,

I wish you could have seen the excitement on your child's face during the reptile show! Although I was "conveniently" located in the far back when the python got taken out ;) I was able to snap a few photos and put them on the 2nd grade Facebook page!

I am looking forward to an eventful week! We will study/reflect/learn from the example of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday. We'll continue multiplication and division, and turn to appreciate how intentionally God placed us in this vast solar system and Milky Way galaxy when we study science.

Blessings!

Mrs. Poncy

Important info:

Reading: Please continue to have your child bring their Knights of the Round Table book to class on school days. Thank you for your help in ensuring that your child is prepared for instruction.
Memory Work: We're moving on to the 5x tables this week! These will be assessed in two weeks, on 1/28.
Handwriting: From this point going forward in the school year, we're fully writing in cursive! By the end of the week, we will have made it through ALL the letters. This week, have your child practice writing in cursive by having them copy stanzas from our Quarter 3 poem and to practice when they respond in their science and history journals.
Science: We're learning a new science poem this week about the Solar System! Even though this one won't be assessed as a grade, consider practicing it on homeschool days (the kids can teach you the motions after we learn it on Monday!)

1/14-1/18

Dear Parents,

We had a great week back from the holidays! I am trying to remember to post more pictures of our time together on school days, so if you haven't already, sneak a peak of what we did last week on the 2nd grade Fortis Facebook page!

We're moving to on to our new classroom virtue this week, Acceptance. In lieu of MLK day coming up on January 21st, I thought it would more than fitting to honor Dr. King's Godly legacy of how he spoke out and stood against the horrible, historical evil of slavery and racism.

Thank you for sharing your child with me.

Blessings in Christ,

Mrs. Poncy

Important info:

Math:  Some of the workbook exercises are divided into 2 days this week; please pay careful attention to the assigned problems and do not have them work ahead. This is the work they will do in class.

Science: We're moving on this week to the Solar System! Students will read the DK First Encyclopedia at home and respond in complete sentences in their journals. We'll study in class about non-fiction text features, such as headings, sub-headings and captions and what they tell us about the text.

Reading: Continue to have your child bring, Knights of the Round Table to class on school days. Check the blog to make sure your child reads the assigned reading before class days so that they are prepared to discuss the reading and go deeper into the text. At Home: I will give your child a literature bookmark with sentence starters that you can use to discuss the reading with your child at home to help you get feedback so that you knew they understood the reading.

Science/History Journals: I know science/history journals are starting to get full! If you need another journal, please shoot me an email, and I will send home a new one.
