Dear Parents,

I have been so blessed the last two weeks to witness how hard I can see that you and your child are working at home, and have been so encouraged by all the collaboration on the facebook page! Thank you for sharing all the great resources that can help a lesson become even more impactful!

This coming week should be an exciting week for us in science, as we begin our unit on earthquakes and volcanoes. We also continue to explore the virtue of obedience! The students seemed to really understand last week that even though Abraham had to leave so much of what was comfortable, what waited for him on the other side were the rewards of obedience to God. This included God making him, "the father of many," (Gen 17:5) and inheriting the promised land!

Don't forget that Monday is no school, but I am looking forward to another week with your child!

Important Info:

Science: Consider checking out books on volcanoes and earthquakes this week! This is a great topic to foster a greater love for non-fiction.
Math: Please continue to work with your child on their addition and subtraction facts. This is so helpful as we add on the challenge of regrouping.
Geography: Our continents and oceans assessment is this coming Wednesday, September 5th! Everyone seems to be more than prepared, but please review the Continents and Oceans map on Tuesday before the following school day.
Spelling: For parents that are new to Fortis, I have placed the AAS Level 1 and 2 Key Cards in your child's binder. Please continue to review these with your child.

Important Dates:

Blessings in Christ,

Dear Parents,

We had a wonderful week last week! I am personally looking forward to seeing you on Monday, 8/27 for Open House at 6:00pm! The kids are SO excited about our upcoming pizza day on Wed, 8/29! It's going to be another awesome week!

This week in history, we are studying the destruction of Herod's temple. It is so important for us to understand the historical facts surrounding the temple's destruction, but the deeper implication, biblically, is that it was the Jews' lack of obedience to God and lack of repentance that required their beloved temple (that they had replaced worship of God with) to be destroyed. I'm looking forward to studying the virtue of obedience with your child!

Important Info:

Math: Please incorporate the review of addition and subtraction facts in your math time during homeschool days. Here are the links to flashcards!

Science/History: This week we are starting a response journal to science and history. Students will write a few sentences in response to what they read at home in science and in history. This gives them an opportunity to connect more deeply to the text. The journal can stay at home, but I will email you if I'd like them to bring it to school! I'll send it home Monday.

Spelling: I will be sending home key cards from the previous AAS levels that are laminated inside your child's binder (Level 1-2) so that you can be practicing these during your spelling time. Parents new to Fortis need these!

Binder Organization: Most work that students do at home can be filed behind the appropriate tab of their binder. Please return work that I have asked for in the communication tab, so I can easily find it. I will also put work that is completed/graded at school in the communication tab so that you can see it and then file.

Memory WorkQuarter 1 Poem: "The Months", Due 9/26

Dear Parents,

I can't believe another week is behind us! I have so enjoyed our school days together and treasure them greatly. This week, we focus again on courage and continue our scripture memory. We'll focus this week on the persecution of the early Church. I'm praying that the lives of Peter and Paul and all the early Christians would serve as courageous examples to all of the students!

Just a reminder: Pizza Day is next week! On the last Wednesday of every month, we will have pizza delivered to school. You may have paid for pizza when you registered, but if not (and if you want your child to have pizza) please give a check of $35 or email bbrannan@fortisacademy.net and he can add to your FACTS account.

I look forward to another wonderful week with these precious kiddos!

Blessings,

Mrs. Poncy

Important Dates:
August 27th: Open House, 6-7pm
August 29th: Pizza Day

Important Info
Math:
Our first math assessment is this coming Wednesday. The assessment will be in the exact same format students have been practicing in class and at home in their workbooks and textbooks. It will cover place-value to the 100's, comparing numbers, and greater than/less than. I will send home a math review, (please find this in the communication tab of your child's binder.)
Reading: Please continue encouraging your child to read independently as much as possible. Consider checking out books at the library that correspond with our science unit (oceans, rivers, lakes and this week, deserts.)
Student History Narrations: This week, we will begin student history narrations, where each week one student will present on what they have learned from our weekly history lesson! I'll reach out by email if it is your child's turn to present. I will email more information about the narrations!
Geography: The continents and oceans assessment is fast approaching on September 5th. For this assessment, students only have to point and identify the continents and oceans (they do not have to write them in the blanks). However, for some students, writing them in the blanks can lead to increased fluency as they learn to recognize these commonly used words in everyday literature.
Copy Work: Since many have asked, I wanted to reach out and let you know that all copy work for now can be done in print until we have more cursive tools under our belt!
