Fortis Academy Second Grade - 1/25-1/29

Please double check list on back of binder to ensure all textbooks are sent to class!  Thank you!!

Math-The book is teaching multiplication and division of 4's this week, which should be a review for the students.  We are skipping around a little bit so please follow the instructions on the blog.  If students finish early, I will have them start working on some of the assignments for Tuesday and Thursday as they should be able to complete them without further instruction.  Please note that all word problems in workbook and any Textbook practices need to have bar models.  The quiz Wednesday will cover the strategies we have been using this semester thus far.  We've learned a few different ones and they will not be required to use a specific one as long as they can complete the problems.

Spelling-We did skip Step 14, which was an oversight on my part.  We'll circle back to it later in the semester.

Grammar-The students are doing wonderfully in class with our two new parts of speech Subject Pronouns and Possessive Pronouns.  We'll have a short quiz this Wednesday.

Reading-We are starting St George and the Dragon this week at school.  Our project for this book will be done at school, but there will be some light writing at home.  We have been practicing picking out main ideas so when a student dictates to you, if they don't use a complete sentence, prompt them to re-word it.  They do this frequently in class so it should not be new to them.  Similarly if it doesn't make sense, repeat it back to them and ask if they think it makes sense.

Writing-This semester the students will be doing Writing With Ease with me at school as a writing curriculum.  We started it this week and they did really well.  At home, you'll continue practicing cursive.  Copy work for the most part will consist of Bible verses related to our virtue that we are currently studying.

Science-We are studying Jupiter now and we'll be doing a lab where we make a hurricane!  We will be finishing memorizing our Science Poem later in the semester-I'll give you plenty of notice but for now you may want to review the second half periodically.

Fortis Academy Second Grade - 1/18-1/21

We are now using Singapore Math 2B Workbook and Textbook-please make sure these are the books you are sending to school.  As a reminder, there is a list of books that students need every day on the back of the binder.  Please review that list and ensure your student has everything listed before they come to school.  Thank you so much!

Math-Singapore is designed to move from the concrete (manipulatives) to pictoral (textbook) to abstract (workbook).  We took a break from mental math while doing multiplication and division last quarter so if your child is struggling, it is totally fine and encouraged to use concrete objects or pictures to help them with their workbook.  Please continue to check the workbooks for accuracy on home school days.

Grammar-We learned subject pronouns this week and the students completely impressed me with how much they remembered.  Keep up the good work!  In an effort to reduce workload, I pick and choose which part of lessons for you to teach at home so please only do what is assigned on the blog (unless you feel like your student needs extra help).

Reading-We started Around the World in 80 Days (modified for 2nd grade) and we are focusing on comprehension.  Again, I was very impressed with them!  I'm expecting great things for this semester :)

Science-We are finishing up space rocks this week.  We'll study before our quiz on Wednesday beforehand, but focusing on the PP page on space rocks will help for studying.  The Jupiter flashcards will be sent home in the binder on Monday.

History-This week we are taking a departure from written journal entries as we study the Crusades.  Task Cards will be sent home Monday.  The students can choose which six to do each home school day (they are multiple choice) and you're welcome to use outside resources or research on line if you can't find the answer from the readings.

Fortis Academy 2nd Grade - 1/11-11/15

Welcome back!  I have missed each of my students and can't wait to see them again!  We will be doing a fair amount of review this week but are diving right in with math.  Please make sure you place the Singapore 2B Workbook and Textbook in your student's backpack.

Math- We will continue learning the multiplication tables 1-10, but we are revisiting the mental math strategies we used in the first quarter, including addition and subtraction with renaming (borrowing) with units of money and time so please continue to practice all math facts.

Reading-This semester there will be more of a writing component to our reading assignments, many in class but some at home also.  I am starting a writing curriculum, Writing With Ease, that you will see on the blog, but only used at school so we can practice some of the elements of style to better prepare for the formal writing curriculum you will see in third grade.  We have officially finished OPG but I encourage you to go back and review lessons your student struggled with for mastery on light days.  Our first reader for this quarter will be Saint George and the Dragon, starting in two weeks so please make sure you have purchased it.
