Math-Please continue to review mental math strategies (found on pg. 16-17 in HIG).  When MM (mental math) is assigned, you can make a copy of it and use it as a warm up.  Please don’t spend more than 10-15 minutes on MM.  If MM is not assigned, use the math facts sheet found in the Math section of binder as a warm-up.  All word problems need bar models, equations, and statement sentences.

Spelling-Please continue practicing phonograms and sound cards (dictating the sound and having them write them down).  The students added a phonogram assessment tracker to the spelling portion of their binder.  We’ll do assessment 1 first quarter, 2 second quarter, etc. so you can use that as a guide when looking at which phonograms they are responsible for knowing.

Reading-Your child should be reading 20-30 minutes every home school day.  If OPG only takes 10 minutes, they may supplement that time with a classical book of their choosing.

History-All History journal entries should have a title and the date.  When they answer the question, the entry should be in 2-4 complete sentences.  Please encourage them to use correct grammar and spelling.  One way to do this is to have them dictate to you what they want to say and you copy it with correct grammar and spelling, then have them copy it into their journals.  This will stay at home but I will collect once a quarter for a homework grade.

Memory Work/Geography-Please spend 5-10 minutes every homeschool day reviewing our map and poem.  We will also work on this during class.  Geography songs are found on the Fortis home page under curriculum.  Tests consist of students pointing and singing/saying locations from a word bank orally to the teacher.  Students will recite poems in front of the class without notes.

Oral History Narrations - Once a semester each child will present what they learned the last week in History to the class.  I will designate when it is their turn on the blog.  They may have a card with notes on it (no complete sentences), but have them practice it enough that they are not reading from the card. Feel free to make it longer, but think in the range of 3-5 facts.  We will utilize speaking in front of the class in several different subjects.  When it comes time to recite, please have them practice reciting at home for different types of audiences (siblings, stuffed animals, parents).  Work on fluency, not fidgeting and eye contact.

Grammar-You only need to complete the assigned sections of the grammar lesson.  If you are unsure of how the question/answer flow works, there are oral examples at the end of the cd with the jingles.

Bible - Our current virtue is responsibility. I am sending home a chore chart that the students will fill in themselves with some stickers. If they want to keep track for a week and return it to me filled in next Wednesday, they can earn a sticker for their sticker books but this is completely optional. If they choose to do, it please sign the bottom as a witness. We are working on honesty in class, but some accountability can help with this :)
